You've been going back and forth on this for a while.

Therapy feels like admitting something's actually wrong. You don't have a diagnosis. No trauma you'd point to. So it feels like the wrong door.

Coaching feels safer. Sounds like performance, targets, moving forward. But some part of you suspects it won't touch what's actually going on underneath. So you've done neither.

Why "I don't have a problem" stops you at the therapy word

Most men picture therapy as something for people with a specific thing to unpack. If that's not you, fair enough. But that's not all it is.

It's time with someone who has no agenda, doesn't rely on you for anything, doesn't need you to perform. Space to process the reactions that aren't helpful anymore, the things you get stuck on, the decisions you've made and still turn over. You don't need a crisis to want that. You just need to be honest that something's sat there unprocessed.

Why coaching on its own isn't always enough

The coach you're picturing instead is probably the hustle type. 10x mindset. Multiply your income. Add another lead source. More of the more.

That has its place. But if what's actually sitting under the busyness is an old pattern, a reaction you can't shake, or stress you've been managing instead of resolving, a pep talk bounces straight off it. Coaching gives you drive. It doesn't give you depth. Push a man forward without dealing with what's underneath, and he just gets faster at running the same lap.

What actually works: both, together

This is why I don't make you pick. Counselling gives you the depth, the space to understand where a pattern or a reaction actually came from. Coaching gives you the forward momentum to build something with what you find. Therapeutic depth, with the drive of coaching behind it.

In practice, that's looked like: a business owner who started working less and saw more success, because he was resourced instead of running on empty. A man who realised, well into a successful career, that he hadn't actually enjoyed his own life in years, and finally took the trip he'd been putting off since his twenties. Men who came in for something that felt manageable on the surface, and found the deeper work changed far more than the original issue.

A quick way to tell which you need

If you can't point to anything specific but you're low on drive and can't get moving, that's coaching-shaped.

If you keep reacting the same way to the same things and can't work out why, that's counselling-shaped.

If it's both, which it usually is, that's exactly what I do.

If you're still not sure

You don't need to self-diagnose before you reach out. That's what the first conversation is for.

I work with men across Dorset in whatever format fits a busy life: WhatsApp video, walk and talk near Bere Regis, or in person in Parkstone, Poole or Bournemouth. No sales funnel, no automated sequence. A real reply, from me.
